What Is An Eyelid Lump?
An eyelid lump is a localised swelling on or around the eyelid, most often caused by a blocked oil gland, an infected eyelash follicle, or a benign cyst. The two most common types are a chalazion, a firm, usually painless swelling from a blocked meibomian gland, and a stye, a tender, red lump from an infected eyelash follicle.
Most eyelid lumps are harmless, though they can be uncomfortable, persistent or cosmetically bothersome, and an accurate diagnosis is important for peace of mind.
You may have an eyelid lump if you notice:
- A firm or tender swelling on the lid
- Redness around the affected area
- Discomfort when blinking
- Gradual swelling over days to weeks
- A lump that hasn't resolved with home care

- Often resolves without surgery

How An Eyelid Lump Is Diagnosed
Most eyelid lumps are diagnosed with a straightforward clinical examination, assessing the size, location and characteristics of the swelling. Occasionally, further assessment is needed to distinguish a benign lump from a less common but more serious growth.
What To Expect From Treatment
Many eyelid lumps settle on their own with warm compresses and eyelid hygiene. Persistent lumps that don’t resolve can be treated with a minor in-clinic procedure to drain or remove them, performed quickly under local anaesthetic.
Risks & Safety
A minor eyelid procedure carries a low, well-established risk profile, similar to any small skin procedure. Mr Parnell will explain what’s involved and any specific risks before proceeding.
Recovery
Recovery from a minor eyelid procedure is usually quick, with mild swelling or bruising settling within a week or two. Most patients resume normal activities the same or the following day.
When To Seek Help
