How Often Should You Have an Eye Examination?

Regular eye examinations are an important part of maintaining healthy vision and detecting eye conditions at an early stage. How often you need an eye examination depends on your age, overall health, family history, vision, and individual risk factors.

For many healthy adults, an eye examination every one to two years is appropriate. Children and young people may benefit from more frequent assessments, particularly if there are concerns about vision or eye development.

People who have diabetes, glaucoma or other eye conditions, a strong family history of eye disease, significant changes in vision, or who take certain medications may need examinations more frequently. Contact lens wearers should also follow the review schedule recommended by their eye-care professional.

You should not wait for your next routine appointment if you notice a sudden change in vision, new flashes or floaters, a curtain or shadow across your vision, significant eye pain, or sudden loss of sight. These symptoms may require urgent assessment.

Your ophthalmologist or optometrist can recommend an examination schedule tailored to your individual needs. Regular eye checks can help protect your vision and provide reassurance that your eyes remain healthy.
