Protecting Your Eyes: Simple Steps for Lifelong Eye Health
Your eyes work hard every day, and a few simple habits can help protect your vision and maintain good eye health. Regular eye examinations are an important part of prevention, as they can detect changes or eye conditions before noticeable symptoms develop.
Protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation by wearing sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection, particularly when spending extended periods outdoors. If you work in an environment where there is a risk of flying particles, chemicals, or other hazards, always use appropriate protective eyewear.
For prolonged computer, tablet, or smartphone use, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something around 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Remember to blink regularly and adjust your screen brightness, position, and lighting to reduce visual discomfort.
A balanced diet, regular physical activity, not smoking, and maintaining conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure under control can also support long-term eye health. Avoid rubbing your eyes unnecessarily, practise good contact lens hygiene, and follow your eye-care professional’s advice regarding lens wear and replacement.
Most importantly, do not ignore changes in your vision. Sudden vision loss, new flashes or floaters, a curtain-like shadow, significant eye pain, or sudden changes in vision require prompt medical assessment.
Taking these practical steps—and attending regular eye examinations when recommended—can help safeguard your sight throughout life.
